Alongside Metro and Sobeys, Loblaw is the third largest food giant in Quebec following the acquisition in 1995 of Provigo‘s 250 stores, a Quebec-based chain. Owned by the Toronto-based mega-group George Weston, Loblaw is well known for the excellence of its house brands such as President’s Choice. Loblaw has thus an enviable position on the Quebec market and has recently decided to build on its Provigo banner for the foreseeable future.
When it comes to convenience stores, Loblaw has the smallest network of the three big chains: it nevertheless operates the Proprio banner, which groups independent owners and also Axep, located halfway between a convenience store and a small local grocery.
