Your MP Live… from Depanneur Nobert!

This is a scene that is likely to become pure routine as thousands of convenience stores are joining social networks and Facebook in particular.

Catherine Fournier, the youngest Member of Parliament elected in Quebec history, paid this week a visit to Dépanneur Nobert in Longueuil (Le Dépanneur banner, Sobeys) to record her weekly live video bulletin.

Only 25 years old and newly elected in the wake of the resignation of former MP Bernard Drainville, now a TV commentator, one sees that she has a passion for politics.

For more than ten minutes, she tells in detail her week as a MP, her various social gatherings and the wonderful people she had met without ever slowing down her enthusiastic flow.

In the background, stacks of 24 cases of beer from Dépanneur Nobert remind the viewer where she’s at.

The event takes place as part of the Parti Quebecois’ Priority SME tour (#prioritepme), during which the economic MP team of the Official Opposition meet with SME leaders in their workplace.

The choice of the Dépanneur Nobert stems from its local reputation as the place to get your beer. The store is famous for its imposing, even monstrous stacks of beer cases.

The depanneur’s Facebook page has a significant number of subscribers (3749) and even more likes. It can thus stay in touch with its customer base, educate about new products and promote events, contests and specials.

Such popularity does not go unnoticed by politicians who, too, want to reach the same local audience. A simple publication of the video on the depanneur’s page et voilà: in three days only, it was seen more than 5000 times! That is a very good hit and directly aimed to her core audience.

So the question arises: from beer, tobacco, lottery and gasoline vendors, will convenience stores transcend their core mission at some point to become content producers?

The future will tell but so far, so good!

Meanwhile, for those interested, you can watch Catherine Fournier’s lovely video here (in French only).
